Ffion wins The Appeti Sponge Ball Championship 2011!

Our November social saw academy players, their families and coaches taking to the courts for this year’s Appeti Sponge Ball Championship.

This tournament has become an annual event with all ages mixing together to compete on mini courts with 23” rackets and sponge balls

This year a number of our players fancied their chances and were all keen to showcase their skills during the round robin box stages. After two rounds of very close matches with some fantastic rallies Richard and Ffion met in one semi Final whilst Tim faced Graham in the other. Once again there were some great points with Richard and Ffion’s match being decided by a net cord!

The final saw Ffion coming head to head with Tim. In the early stages both players matched each other point for point but Ffion’s depth of shot proved too much for Tim and a new Champion was crowned with Ffion taking the title 10-7

The tournament finished with everyone enjoying fish and chips from Wincheap’s ‘Marino’s Fish Bar’ whilst discussing their favourite shot of the evening.

Appeti Tennis welcomes 90 New Players!

Over the last month Appeti Tennis, in partnership with The Canterbury High School, have been working with nine local primary schools delivering their 123 Junior tennis programme.

The nine schools involved were:-

Bridge and Patrixbourne Primary School

Chartham Primary School

Hernhill Primary School

St Mary’s Primary School

St Peter’s Methodist Primary School

St Stephens’ Infant School

Swalecliffe Primary School

The Canterbury Primary School

Wincheap Primary School

Each of these schools have received four free weeks of coaching funded by The Tennis Foundation during curriculum time. From this outreach programme we are pleased to welcome over ninety new youngsters to our Canterbury centre where they are learning more about the game of tennis.

All the youngsters that have decided to develop their tennis further will receive eight more weeks of subsidised coaching delivered by the same team of coaches who have been busy working with them at their schools. Tim Bean, Ffion Newberry, Richard Myall and Graham Hunt are all looking forward to coaching this new wave of promising players.

It is hoped these keen youngsters will continue and want to follow in the footsteps of our older players already involved in the Appeti Academy.

Thanks again to The Canterbury High School and The Tennis Foundation for supporting this year’s programme.

The Appeti Tennis Championships 2011

The 2011 Appeti Championships finished last weekend with finals being closely contented throughout Sunday.

The day started with our 14U players taking to the courts.

The Boys 14U final proved to be a rematch of last year. Dan Gould met Jamie Wallace in what proved to be another close battle. Jamie took an early lead but Dan dug deep and fought back to level the score. After some fantastic rallies Dan managed to edge ahead and took the first set 7-5. The second set was no different to the first with Dan wanting to reverse last year’s scores. Both boys played some great tennis throughout but Dan managed to secure the title for 2011 by taking the second set 6-3.

Meanwhile on the other court the Girls 14U final saw Saffron Taylor, who is part of The Canterbury High School programme, playing Evie Robertson. Saffron played well but Evie’s greater experience showed through and helped her take the match 6-1, 6-0

The 10U event saw Ollie Richards and Dushan Sreckovic meeting head to head. There were some brilliant points which had all the spectators on the edge of their seats as both boys pulled out all the stops to try and win through. Unfortunately for Ollie, Dushan just couldn’t miss and played some stunning shots to ensure he left the court victorious with a winning score of 5-3 4-2.

Graham Hunt, a member of The Canterbury High School Tennis Academy, and Michael Williams met in the 16U final in what proved to be another close affair. The boys have met a few times before and Michael had the slight edge going into the match. However Graham’s hard work and effort over the last few months paid off and he was thrilled to take the match 6-3, 7-5.

Our first doubles event was next on court with Evie Robertson joining forces with Dan Gould to take on Martin Dovey and Saffron Taylor for the 14U Mixed doubles final. Martin and Saffron put up a great fight but Evie’s and Dan’s experience and strength helped them win through in straight sets 6-4, 6-0

The mens singles pulled the greatest crowd of the day with Tim Bean and Richard Myall, two of the centre’s coaches, facing each other. Their pupils had entered into the spirit of the day and showed their support through personalised banners for their respective coach. Both men have beaten each other in the past and so a close match was guaranteed. In the fifth game Tim managed to break serve and never looked back to take the match 6-2, 6-2.

The 12U draws took to the courts next with Saffron Taylor meeting Rosie Hewett in the girls and Martin Jones meeting Dushan Sreckovic in the boys. Both matches were won by the older more experienced players but both younger opponents put up a great fight and clearly showed their potential for the future. Well done to Saffron and Dushan the 12U champions for this year.

The final matches of the day saw Richard Myall and Tim Bean join forces to take on the 14U singles finalists, Dan Gould and Jamie Wallace in the men’s doubles final and four of our younger players, Oliver Richards and JoJo Thomas meeting Dushan Sreckovic and Elliot Wraight in the 14U doubles final.

Both matches were close but Oliver and JoJo won through to take the 14U title, 6-3, 6-1 whilst the coaches won through to win this year’s mens title but who can tell what will happen in the future!!!

We’d like to congratulate all our players who have competed in The Appeti Championships 2011 and well done to all our trophy winners!!

Kent Junior County Closed Championships 2011

The final week of the ‘Appeti Summer Tour’ saw fourteen of our youngsters competing in the Kent Junior County Closed Championships 2011 at Bromley Tennis Centre.

The biggest news of the week saw James Davis become the 12U Boys County Champion. James won through five rounds of the 12U Boys Singles draw without dropping a set to reach the final, where he met Jonah Smith. James played faultless tennis and proved unbeatable taking the title, 6-2, 6-1.

This was a great win for James who has worked hard to get himself back to fitness after having to withdraw from his previous Grade 3 final. It is also a great win for tennis in East Kent, our area is notorious for a lack of tennis opportunity and activity, so for a homegrown boy to achieve such success is great for the area. James has been training with Appeti Tennis since he was 6 years old, he and coach Richard Myall have worked together since his first lesson. Richard was there on Sunday to see James take the title and the smile is yet to leave his face. A huge congratulations to James and Richard on their success.

Charlotte Hobbs also had a successful week reaching two consolation finals. Her first, the Girls 18U, was against Naomi Wylde and this proved to be a closely fought affair. At the end of the second set Naomi just pulled ahead in the tiebreak to take the match 6-2, 7-6. Later in the afternoon Charlotte returned to court to face Jenny Tomei in the Woman’s singles. This time Charlotte was able to totally dominate the match to win through 6-0, 6-2. In the 16U Girls Consolation both Evie Robertson and Hannah Tonry reached the semi finals.

The 14U Boys event saw both Jamie Wallace and Dan Gould continuing their impressive summer. Jamie knocked out the number 2 seed Liam Van Den Hoek in an exciting match which saw him playing some of his best tennis. The final result of 7-6(2), 7-6(2) was well deserved. Jamie came close to causing another upset when he played Nicholas Brookes in the quarter finals. Jamie played well after a slow first set and won a nail biting second set but Nicholas was just able to pull ahead in the third set to win the match 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.

In the 9U forty five boys competed to qualify for the final compass draw of sixteen. Both Ollie Richards and JoJo Thomas successfully reached this stage with Ollie just losing out in the consolation final.

Graham Hunt finished his summer with a great match against Nathan Fawcitt, who is two ratings above him, just losing in the third set tiebreak whilst Saffron Taylor, Nathaniel Wyatt Gittins, John Jones, Rosie Hewett and Rob Sotillo all played well and were able to gain valuable tournament experience over the week.

We would like to say well done to all our players on a great summer of tennis!

Tunbridge Wells Summer Junior Tournament 2011.

Next stop on the ‘Appeti Summer Tour’ was the Tunbridge Wells Summer Junior Tournament 2011.

With lots of players of all ages competing, the week proved to be a busy one. In the girls draw, Charlotte Hobbs reached the Quarter Finals of the 18U Singles, beating fellow Appeti player, Hannah Tonry, along the way. Hannah went on to reach the Quarter Finals of the 14U Girls Singles, being beaten by eventual winner Sarah Wray (6.1). In the Consolation Girls draw both Hannah and Evie Robertson reached the Semi Finals. Evie had more success in the 14U Girls Consolation Girls draw, where she reached the final and played Hannah Watton in a really close, nail biting match. Well done to Evie who was victorious, beating Hannah 7-6 (3) 7-5.

Dan Gould had a great week reaching the quarter final of the main draw 14U Boys singles, only losing out to higher rated player, Elliot Ward.

On Friday Jo Jo Thomas, Ollie Richards and Ciaran Brewer competed in the 9 & Under Boys Singles under the watchful eye of coach Tim Bean. Jo Jo Thomas narrowly missed out on reaching the semi finals losing in three sets to eventual finalist, Steven Rich, 7-5 5-7 14-12.

Ciaran returned the next day to compete in the 8 & Under Boys Singles alongside Will Gee. Both boys were joined by coach and former 18U and 21U Kent Champion Ffion Newberry. Ciaran and Will played some great tennis and both reached the semi finals of the draw but although both fought hard did not make a place in the final.

Devonshire Park Open Tournament

Next stop was Devonshire Park Open Tournament in Eastbourne.This tournament is played on the site of The Aegon International Tournament that takes place in June, so juniors from the Appeti Academy got to compete on the same courts as the likes of Venus and Serena, Na Li, Lleyton Hewitt and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

In the Boys 14U draw James Davis reached the quarter finals struggling through a back injury that eventually meant he had to withdraw from the final of the Boys 12U draw. James is now resting to ensure that he is back on form to compete in the AEGON British Junior National Championships in Bournemouth at the weekend.

Also competing in the 14U draw Dan Gould continued his form by beating 13 seed Joshua Pollard 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in a really great match. Dan went on to lose to eventual winner Logan Burgess Hayes.

The Sargeant brothers, Scott and Leigh played some exciting tennis over the week. Leigh competed in the Mens draw where after easing through the first round, took seventh seed, Oliver Gan (5.2) to a close match. Leigh played extremely well and only lost 4-6, 2-6. Scott, clearly inspired by his brother, had a great run in the Boys 16U Consolation. Scott reached the semi final, beating an 8.2 along the way, only to lose to runner up, Kyle Rossi, in a close match.

In the 9U draw both Ollie Richards and Jo Jo Thomas reached the quarter finals watched by coach Tim Bean.

The girls also had a good week of tennis with Charlotte Hobbs playing some fantastic tennis against third seed Alice Johns in the Girls 16U draw and Evie Robertson reaching the semi final of the Girls 14U Consolation draw.

It was a really enjoyable week at the Devonshire Park Open Tournament and an exciting opportunity to play at such a special venue.

The Essex Open Tennis Championships - 2011

The summer started really well for the Appeti Tennis Academy with players attending the Essex Open Tennis Championships in Billericay. Three players, Evie Robertson, Jamie Wallace and Hannah Tonry reached the quarter finals of their respective draws.

Hannah had a great week beating an 8.1 in her first match in the 16U. Hannah continued her form in the 18U draw reaching the quarter finals where she played a fantastic match against eventual finalist 7.1, Rachel Porter. At 5-4 up in the second set Hannah took her opponent to deuce but unfortunately didn't close out the set.

Jamie also played well all week, losing out to finalist Jared Linzell (6.1) in the 16U and reaching the quarter finals of the 14U draw losing out to 7.2, Levi Lowe-Lennon, 6-4, 7-5, in a very close match.

Dan Gould played positive tennis all week and earned himself a place in the 14U Boys Consolation final and looked good until he had to retire with a strained muscle in his arm. Luckily, his arm recovered enough to compete in the semi finals of the 14U Mixed Doubles draw. Dan and partner Evie Robertson proved to be a great team and worked hard to take opponents Leanne Judge and Oliver Norton to a third set tie break but were unable to close it out, eventually losing 7-5, 2-6, 10-5. It looks like a promising doubles partnership could develop though.

On Friday the younger players from Appeti arrived at Billericay ready to compete. Jo Jo Thomas and Ollie Richards were taking part in the 9 & Under Boys Singles Qualifying. There was some superb tennis from both boys in their boxes, with Jo Jo qualifying for the main draw the next day where he reached the quarter finals.

JoJo is the Hythe Open 9U Champion!

Congratulations to JoJo Thomas on becoming the Hythe Open 9U Champion for 2011.

The Appeti Tennis Centre were well represented by our younger players at this tournament. Ciaran Brewer and Oliver Richards also played some great tennis with Oliver just missing out on reaching the final by losing to team mate JoJo 7-6, 2-7, 5-7 in a very close semi.

Will Gee, who was playing in his first Grade 4 event produced some fantastic points in his semi final but lost to a higher rated player 6-10.

Well done to all our younger players but particularly JoJo on this great win. What a brilliant way to start the Summer!

Appeti Tennis At Wimbledon 2011

It was another great Wimbledon for The Appeti Tennis Centre this year, with over 70 of our players visiting The Championships over the two weeks. As well as the sixteen pairs of tickets the centre received for it's players, three trips organised by coaches meant that more kids than ever got to experience a special day at Wimbledon.

Eb Appeti organised the first trip with players and coaches queueing overnight for the first Monday. For their efforts the group were rewarded with great seats on centre court which offered a fantastic view of Rafa’s opening match. With the unpredictable weather it wasn’t long before centre’s court’s roof came into play and the group had the opportunity to experience the benefits that the roof offered with play continuing throughout the rain!

Tim Bean and Helen Shattower took seven juniors from The Canterbury High School with tickets through The Tennis Foundation school’s ballot. On arrival the youngsters were delighted to see Nadal hitting some balls and during the afternoon they had the opportunity to see Djokovic out on practice court. As only one person from this group had ever seen live professional tennis before it was really inspirational for them to sit on court 2 and watch some of Mardy Fish’s match before they had to leave.

The last trip was organised by Helen Shattower, Ric Myall and Ffion Newberry who took nine of the centre's younger players aged between 8 and 13 years for the day. It was a great experience for them and after checking they couldn’t offer their services as hitting partners to the stars they went to the courts where they had front row seats to see Rafa practising. Just round the corner they bumped into Rafa’s dad who happily posed for a group photo. After a quick look at centre court the youngsters moved round to the practice area where they saw the future woman’s Champion, Petra Kvitova working with her coach. Our players were delighted when she stopped to sign autographs as she left. After a great day with plenty of opportunity to see the professionals at work the group were all inspired to work harder so they could be part of the Wimbledon experience as players in the future.

Road To Wimbledon County Finals 2011

The County finals of The Road to Wimbledon event took place last weekend with a great showing from the Appeti Centre. Our players constituted a quarter of all those in the final draws which were made up from the whole of the Kent area.

Evie Robertson, Andrea Sreckovic, Dan Gould and James Davis all played well during the afternoon. After some great matches Andrea and Daniel reached the consolation finals whereas James met Alex Juniper in the main draw final.

Both Andrea and Dan played well with Andrea just missing out to Olivia Sherwen, a higher rated player in the girls while Dan beat Matthew Theobald- Cearns 4-1, 4-1 to win the boys.

The boys final proved to be a closely fought affair with James (7.1) pushing Alex (6.2) all the way, however on this occasion James just lost out 5-3, 4-2 which means the courts of Wimbledon will just have to wait for another year!

12U County Cup Success for Kent and James!

Congratulations to James Davis and the rest of the 12U Kent County Cup Team on becoming National Champions.

James and the rest of the Team had to beat Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire in their round robin at Bisham Abbey to reach the National Finals. Over the two days James played an active role where he competed in both singles and doubles winning all his matches to help Kent progress to the next round.

The National Championships meant that the team had to travel to Bolton in Lancashire where they met the County team from Shropshire. James had to work hard against his first opponent Tom Thelwell-Jones but after a close match he just managed to edge ahead to win 4-2, 2-4, 13-11. With all the other members of the team also winning Kent progressed to the Semi Finals where they had to beat Essex. Again James played well in his singles to take the victory off Jacob Ducksbury 4-0, 4-1. He then joined forces with Thomas Wright to defeat James Caddies and Tommy Smalley to secure the win for Kent which meant only Northampton stood in their way of becoming the National Champions.

To reach the Final both teams had had to beat six other counties and were therefore eager to lift the cup. After some close singles, including James beating Sam Smith 4-1, 4-1, Kent were 2-1 up but needed to win the doubles to ensure they won the title. Once again James joined forces with Thomas and both boys played well as a team to clinche the victory 5-3, 4-1 for Kent.

Well done Kent and well done James on an unbeaten run during the National Championships.

Appeti Tennis at Eastbourne International 2011

On Monday 13th June a party of players, coaches and parents from The Appeti Tennis Centre, Canterbury visited the Aegon International Tournament at Eastbourne. This was the Centre's 6th annual trip and everyone was keen, once again, to see some of their favourite players close up. This year there was a great line up of stars past and present with Venus Williams, Martina Hingus, Henri Laconte, Greg Rusedski and Conchita Martinez all taking to centre court.

The day proved a great success with our youngsters meeting a number of players as well as getting their autographs. After lunch and an ice-cream the party took their seats to watch some great tennis being played.

A good day was had by all and roll on Eastbourne 2012!

Road to Wimbledon 2011

Appeti players have been busy over the last few months competing in our Canterbury Centre’s Road to Wimbledon. Congratulations go to Evie Robertson who won our girls event by beating Andrea Sreckovic 6-1, 6-2 and James Davis who after a very close second set beat Daniel Gould 6-1, 7-6(2) to win the boy's final.

Andrea, Evie, Dan and James were all invited to the County Road to Wimbledon event where 26 clubs from all over Kent compete to find the ultimate winner that would play at Wimbledon in the National Finals. During the first weekend of playoffs both girls played well in their round robin draws but particular mention goes to Andrea who beat Christine Oni in the third set tie break. This was a great achievement as her opponent was two rating levels above her.

In the boys draw Dan Gould won both his matches to join James in the quarter finals which will take place next weekend. Out of the 26 clubs that participated in the Road to Wimbledon, we are proud to have two players in the last eight of the county!

Congratulations to Katherine Davis!

Appeti Tennis would like to congratulate Katherine Davis on making it through to the last 120 in The Barclays Ball Kids Search 2011.

This year 2,500 youngsters from across the country went to regional selection events and only 100 from these hopefuls were chosen to attend the National Trials day. Katherine, one of our Academy players was thrilled to be invited to this final selection.

The day proved to be a great experience with Katherine participating in a number of balance, reaction and agility sessions as well as ball sending and receiving skill exercises. Along side all this Katherine had the opportunity to meet Boris Becker and Mark Petchey who also attended the day.

The final 30 youngsters will be told later this week.

Appeti Tennis at Roland Garros!

Saturday 21st June saw a group of fifteen players, coaches and friends heading to Paris for The French Open’s Kid’s Day.

The day started early with the group meeting at 5.30am in Canterbury to leave for Ashford International where Eurostar transported us under the channel and across the French countryside to Sunny Paris! From the Paris terminal it was just a short metro trip to Roland Garros where we were met by Eb, Faye and Ade, who had travelled the previous day to prepare for our arrival.

Greetings over, we ‘followed the rackets’ to Roland Garros and were soon inside the gates eager to explore the tournament ground and find out which players we could seek out. Just round the corner Robin Soderling, number 5 in the world, was out on court practising. For many of our players this was their first opportunity to see a world ranked player in action on clay.

After this inspirational experience it wasn’t long till the youngsters had chance to see two more of the top five men in the world as Andy Murray and Raphael Nadal left their hitting session. Uncle Tony, Nadal’s coach, paused for a quick photo call and a few words with Jamie before heading back to the players area.

Novak Djokovic was our next target and thanks to Rachel, from Lingo Lingo, our French speaking expert, we were able to be ready at his practice court in prime position for when he arrived.

Our next stop was Philippe Chatrier Court where Bob Sinclair started the event in a real party fashion which instantly grasped the attention and interest of the hundreds of children who were in the packed stadium. This was just the beginning of what proved to be a fun exhibition session with players like Nadal, Mauresmo, Monfils, Schiavone and Tsonga all taking to the court.

After an incredible day, which saw us seeing four of the top five male players in the world there was just time to shop for a few souvenirs and take some last minute photos with some of the players. Thanks to Andy Murray who took time to stop and pose with Spencer and Jamie!

Finally it was time to leave and we set off for our return journey. Everyone had had a great day and all had different highlights to recall. Hopefully this was the first of many trips to Roland Garros! Roll on The French Open 2012!

Cyclists Welcome!

Appeti Tennis are pleased to announce the introduction of a new bike rack to our Canterbury centre.

This is a welcome addition as the weather has improved and both coaches and players are cycling more. With a safe place to leave your bikes we hope to see more and more cyclists over the coming months!

We'd like to thank the Canterbury Academy for providing this area and donating these racks for you all to use.

So come on everyone ‘Get on your bike’ and visit us soon!

James Davis - Top 20 in the UK!

We would like to congratulate James Davis on entering the top 20 in the UK for 12U boys. James is based at our Canterbury centre and has trained with Appeti Tennis since he was five. James and his coach, Richard Myall, have formed a strong relationship both on and off court and are looking forward to further success together.

Last year James had a great summer winning two Grade 3 events at The Essex Open Tennis Championships and Gerrards Cross LTC Open Championships. Since then he has continued to go from strength to strength and has been selected to represent Kent in their 14U county cup team. James has also been a runner up at four other Grade 3 events.

James is Appeti Tennis’ second player to reach the top 20 in the country following in Ffion Newberry’s footsteps.

James is now aiming to reach the Top 10 in the UK!

Easter Tournaments 2011

Easter has been a busy time for our players with the Appeti Tennis Centre being represented at Sutton, Tunbridge Wells, Parklangley and Nottingham. Those competing have ranged from under 8 right through to adults.

Week 1 - Sutton and Tunbridge Wells

The first week of the Easter break saw eleven of our youngsters heading to the courts in Tunbridge Wells.

Dan Gould had a great week. After just losing in his first match against a higher rated player he went on to win the 14U consulation draw. His final against Bradley Stoneham proved an exciting affair with both players hitting some challenging shots. The first set went all the way but Dan dug deep and managed to win through. The second set saw some great rallies but Dan remained calm and used his head to take the match, 7-6(5), 6-3. This was his first singles title and really well deserved!

Charlotte Hobbs also had a good week. Once again she just lost out in the main draw 6-4 6-4 to Beatha Roper-Rice, a player two ratings above her, but went on to reach the U16 consolation final. Although Charlotte played well she just lost out to Lucy Roper 6-7(2), 6-2 6-3.

Other players that should also be mentioned are Robert Sotillo and Rosie Hewett who were competing in their first tournament away from the centre. Both players did well and are looking forward to using the experience they gained in future events.

During this week James Davis was busy competing at Sutton. He started by playing in Tennis Services UK Grade 2 Easter tournament where, after losing in a close match to Damian Rodriguez 6-4, 6-4 he went on to reach the 12U consolation final without dropping a set. The final saw James continue to play confidently to win his first Grade 2 title 6-1 6-2.

James then went on to join the 14U County Cup team who were also playing their matches at Sutton. He made his debut for the Kent team on the Sunday when he partnered Bailey Robbins to take on Avon in the doubles event. Bailey and James made a solid team and went on to win their match 6-4 6-4.

Well done James on both achievements.

Week 2 - Sutton

The second week saw our players heading to Sutton for their Grade 4 event.

Jamie Wallace and Dan Gould both put in solid performances in the 16U draw. Jamie met the first seed Emmanuel Price and after a slow start in the first set Jamie settled and played some much better tennis. Emmanuel, however took the match 6-0, 6-4. Dan pushed the second seed, Daniel Engley, all the way but after a real battle just lost out 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-1. Jamie and Dan then joined forces in the 15U doubles event. Both boys worked well as a team and played some exciting tennis to beat the number 1 seeds and take the final 6-4, 7-5.

Martin Dovey also played well in his first Sutton tournament. After getting used to the clay he reached the final of the 12U consolation draw and after some close points lost to James Bowran 6-1, 6-2.

Appeti Tennis are pleased to announce that they have joined forces with The Local Tennis Leagues to offer more opportunities for adults to compete at a local level. The Local Tennis Leagues operate throughout the country, are open to all standards and are recognised by the Tennis Foundation. If you are over 18 and would like to find out more about these leagues then please click on the link below.

Also Tennis Services Uk have just released their competition guide for April through to August. This gives details of matchplay and tournament opportunities for both adults and juniors alike and copies are available at our Canterbury Centre. Can you spot our Academy player on the front cover?!!

A busy week for Appeti Players!

Half term has been a busy time for our players both at home and away.

Away from home our Academy juniors were competing at Wilton and Bromley. Over the week a number of our players put in some good performances but special mention should go to Jamie Wallace, Spencer Pells and JoJo Thomas.

Spencer was playing at Wilton where he reached the 16 and Under consolation final without dropping a set. In the final he met Kieran Macarty and after a very closely fought first set lost 7-5, 6-0.

Just a few miles away Jamie was competing at Bromley where like Spencer he too reached his 14 and under consolation final in straight sets. Jamie played some fantastic tennis against Alex Walters, a higher rated player, but unfortunately just lost out on taking the title 7-6(3), 0-6 1-0(8).

JoJo was also playing at Bromley where he reached the final eight out of 32 in the 9 and under. He was the lowest rated player to reach this stage which was a great achievement as this was his first tournament in this age group. He then rounded up the week by returning to Bromley for their orange matchplay where he won all five of his matches.

At the centre the week started with some of our orange ball youngsters taking to the courts. Some great matches were played with some very close results. The next day saw our youngest competitors in a red ball tournament. Will Gee and Stephen Friend won through to meet each other in the final. After a great battle Stephen took the medal 10-7.

We’d like to congratulate Graham Hunt on becoming The Canterbury High School’s Apprentice of the Year. Graham has been with us for the last two years working alongside our coaches helping our younger players develop their skills. He has gained in confidence and works well within the team. Whilst working with us Graham has been able to improve his personal level of play and has recently entered our Academy

Well done Graham for your achievement and keep up the good work!!

We would also like to say well done to two of our other academy members, Alex Mount who was the international sports person of the year and Saffron Taylor who was runner up in the Key Stage 2 Sports person of the year.

David completes The Tough Guy Challenge 2011

Congratulations to David Wood on completing the 2011 Tough Guy Challenge. David who has been playing at the centre since our opening in 2005 completed the challenge in around 3 and a half hours.

The Challenge is a combination of cross country and an army style assault course, totalling around 8 miles.

The challenge includes water, running through fire, barbed wire tunnels, cargo nets, water jumps and an assortment of other army style obstacles.

The challenge took place near Wolverhampton and Eb accompanied David on the trip.

Appeti Tennis Goes Bowling - January 2011

Saturday 22nd January saw 27 Appeti academy players, their coaches and parents taking to the bowling lanes at Bugsy Bowling in Canterbury. Everyone was quickly sorted into lanes and the competition began.

As the evening progressed techniques were developed so more pins started to fall and the number of strikes increased. After some very close rounds scores were added up and congratulations went to Graham Hunt who was the highest scoring junior and Eb Appeti who was the overall winner.

The evening ended with everyone enjoying a much deserved supper whilst sharing stories about their best shots and how much better they would bowl next time!!!

Tim wins first Sponge Ball Tournament of 2011!

2011 started off with a bang at the Appeti Tennis Centre, Canterbury with twenty two players, coaches, parents and brothers competing in our first sponge ball event of the year. Throughout the morning there were some exciting, close matches with nail biting finishes!

Everyone was then shuffled round and the qualifiers went into play off boxes. After some more great competitions Eb Appeti met Dan Gould in one semi whilst Spencer Pells faced Tim Bean in the other. Again two close matches followed with Eb winning through to play Tim in the final. The final, as expected was a fierce battle with neither player wanting to lose. The first break of serve didn't happen until 8-8 when Tim managed to break through after a missed forehand volley from Eb. Tim won 10-8 to take the match and trophy.

The morning rounded off with a tasty fish and chip lunch from Marino’s at Wincheap and everyone agreeing it was a great way to start the year!

Congratulations to Ciaran Brewer!

We would like to congratulate Ciaran Brewer on becoming a Red 1. This is a great achievement for him as there are only sixteen children in the whole of Kent who have this rating. Ciaran is one of our youngest academy members and has made great progress over the last year. Well done Ciaran we are all proud of you!

Oliver Richards have also been busy over the Christmas break. In his matchplay at Kingshill he played some brilliant tennis to win all six matches with only dropping one game all afternoon. He then paired up with team mate JoJo Thomas to compete in the doubles tournament at The Canterbury Indoor Centre where both boys played well only just missing out on getting into the final.

Well done to all our players who have competed over the last few weeks and we are all looking forward to a successful year!

December's Achievements

Well done to James who reached the final in his recent Winter regional tournament at Beckenham. He played some great tennis to win through 3 matches without dropping a set. His final was an exciting affair but after a fantastic match James just lost out to the number one seed, Roberto Preka. James has had a a really good year and achieved some pleasing results which he should be proud of!

We’d also like to congratulate Dan Gould for his recent success at a winter county tour at Bromley. Dan had to qualify for this event and won both his matches to reach the final. He was particularly pleased with his second win against Euan Butler as Euan is higher rated and on the two previous occasions they have played Dan has lost.

After a close final his opponent, Louis Weymont just won through to take the victory but well done Dan and keep up the good work!

Cinema Night at Appeti Tennis, Canterbury

This month’s Academy Social saw the Appeti Tennis Centre turned into a cinema for the evening. The reception area became the foyer with popcorn, hotdogs, sweets and drinks on offer whilst the lounge became ‘screen 3’. In true cinema fashion everyone got their tickets on arrival and quickly sorted out their refreshments before being shown to their seats for the main event. It wasn’t long before the lights dimmed and the film began to roll!

During the intermission Eb changed his hotdog apron for an ice-cream attendant’s tray before moving through the audience delivering his wares before the second half began!

The evening proved a great success and hopefully will be the first of a regular cinema night so watch this space!!!

November's Achievements

November has been another good month for our players with some solid performances both at home and away.

Congratulations to James Davis who is presently 39th in the country in his age group. This is a great achievement as this is the first time he has broken into the top 40. Well done James your hard work is beginning to pay off and we all look forward to seeing you hit top 20!!

Ciaran Brewer, one of our younger academy players did really well at the recent 8U Hayne Barn matchplay, where he was runner up.

Dan Gould reached the final in a Winter County Tour event held at Bromley but after a great match just lost out to Lucas Percy.

Well done to all our youngsters who are out competing at the moment and keep up the good work!

Richard wins Red Ball Tournament for second year running!!

Our October social saw academy members, parents, coaches and friends taking to the courts to fiercely compete in 2010’s Appeti Sponge Ball Championship. This tournament is open to all ages and is played on mini courts with 23” rackets and sponge balls. This year it was great to be joined by several new players to the mini tennis format including our American friends Butch and John and Lingo Lingo teacher, Rachel.

The evening started well with everyone sorted into boxes ready to prove that they were worthy of taking the 2010 trophy. After two rounds and some very close matches Richard, Scott, John and Fenner won through to the semis. Once again there were some great rallies and points with Fenner and Richard winning to come head to head in the final. After an exciting match Richard continued his winning streak taking the title from Fenner 10-5 to retain his title.

The evening finished with everyone tucking into fish and chips from Marino’s fish bar whilst discussing how to beat Richard next year!!!

Recent Achievements for Appeti Players

In the last month Appeti Players have achieved some great results with our younger players leading the way.

The month started well with Ciaran Brewer winning his first 8U Winter County Tour at The Canterbury Indoor Tennis Centre. He played some great tennis winning his final 10-3 against James Crookston.

Team mate Oliver Richards continued Ciaran’s success in recent Orange matchplays at Kings Hill and Gravesham where he played twelve matches and won eleven of them.

Won done to both lads we are sure they will continue their success in future competition.

James Davis had a great week at the recent Bromley Autumn Tournament. He won three matches to get to the final without dropping a set. James is currently ranked 44th in the country in his age group and although he continued to play well was just edged out by higher ranked Alex Juniper who took the 12U title.

John Jones and Charlotte Hobbs also had a successful half term finishing as runners up in their respective consolation draws at Beckenham and Bromley. John lost to the number one seed after an exciting match and Charlotte beat a higher rated player to secure her prize.

The Appeti Championships 2010

The 2010 Appeti Championships finished last weekend with finals being closely contented throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday was doubles day with six titles to be decided. The mixed doubles matches took to the courts first. In the 14U group the experience and strength of Dan Gould and Nancy Gullett helped them successfully beat their opponents John Jones and Emma Ball in straight sets. Emma however showed great spirit to finish the match with what proved to be a fractured finger!

The Adult mixed event was a much closer affair with Hannah Tonry and Harry Taylor taking an early lead. Jamie Wallace and Kate Robertson fought back though and managed to win through in the championship tiebreak to take the match 5-7, 6-2,10-6

It was then the turn of the 14U boys and girls doubles to take to the stage. Both matches were close affairs with Robert Sotillo and John Jones taking the boys title and Nancy Gullet and Katherine Davis taking the girls.

The day was rounded off with the adults. This time Kate and Hannah teamed up to play Rebecca Riezebos and Rachel Davis in the Ladies event. After a long close match Kate and Hannah eventually won through to give Kate her second title of the day.

Richard Myall and Tim Bean joined forces to take on two of their pupils, Josh Pennick and Graham Hunt in the Men’s final. This year the coaches won through but who can tell what will happen in the future!

Sunday meant it was the turn of the singles matches. The first finals of the day saw the 12U draws being played. Evie Robertson faced Saffron Taylor in the girls and Alex Mount met John Jones in the boys. Both matches were won by the older more experienced players but both younger opponents put up a great fight and clearly showed their potential for the future. Well done to Evie and Alex the 12U champions for this year.

Our 16U juniors were next on court with Hannah Tonry playing Kate Robertson in the girls and Jamie Wallace battling against Fenner Robertson in the boys. Once again both matches were very close with Jamie and Kate winning through to lift the ‘crown’

After a short break Kate was back on court to face Rebecca Riezebos in the 18U Girls final to see if she could take her fourth title of the weekend! Both girls played really well but Kate, once again pulled through to win 6-4, 6-4. The boys 18U saw Michael Williams challenging last year’s champion, Harry Taylor, whose greater experience showed and although Michael put up a good challenge Harry retained his title.

The 14U girls draw saw Hannah facing Evie. Evie played well but Hannah’s greater strength gave her the advantage and she took the match 6-2, 6-3.

The Boys 14U final proved to be the match of the afternoon with Dan Gould meeting Jamie Wallace in what proved to be a great battle. Both boys worked hard and exchanged some fantastic rallies which made the match an exciting, if at times nail-biting affair for the spectators. However Jamie just edged ahead and left the court victorious.

The final matches of the weekend saw quite a crowd supporting their coaches, as both finals were contested by Appeti Tennis Team members.

Rebecca Riezebos challenged the vastly more experienced Ffion Newberry in the Ladies. Rebecca played well and made her opponent work for every point. Although she lost Rebecca did take some games and felt she’d learnt a lot and is looking forward to a rematch in the future.

The Mens draw saw the doubles pairing of Richard Myall and Tim Bean splitting to face each other across the net. In a previous encounter at Essex earlier this year Richard have taken the championship tiebreak to win the match but this time Tim won through to turn the tables to take the title 6-2, 3-6, 10-3

The Tennis Foundation helps over 500 youngsters experience tennis.

This month we are pleased to welcome at least fifty new youngsters into our junior programme on The Canterbury Campus. A grant from The Tennis Foundation has meant that during September our coaches have been very busy working with over 500 local children in their primary schools. Every child who received coaching was offered the opportunity to have four weeks subsidised follow on sessions at one of our venues.

It was also great to have Nonington Primary visit the centre where they spent the day working with one of our coaches developing their tennis skills. Once again every youngsters was offered the opportunity to join an after school session.

We’d like to thank The Tennis Foundation for making these sessions possible and are looking forward to working with more schools in for the future.

The subsidy from the Tennis Foundation means that we will be able to visit local primary schools weekly for the next two years.

Tunbridge Wells 2010

Fourteen players and their coaches headed towards the courts at Tunbridge Wells LTC for the fourth week of the Appeti Summer Tour. This week’s Grade 3 tournament saw the players competing on grass, tarmac and artificial clay in some very closely fought matches.

James Davis continued his successful summer by reaching his third main draw singles final in four tournaments. Seeded four James faced the number two seed, Andrew Berry. The final proved to be extremely close match with James just losing out, 6-4, 6-7(5),7-5.

We would also like to congratulate Spencer Pells and Evie Robertson who reached the 18 and under mixed doubles final, Kate Robertson and Hannah Tonry who contested the 18 and under Girls doubles final and James who joined forces with team mate Dan Gould in the 14 and under boys final.

Gerrards Cross 2010

Week three of the Appeti Summer Tour saw eighteen of our players and coaches attending the Gerrards Cross LTC Junior and Senior Open Tournament 2010. Fifteen out of the eighteen camped during the week and despite the rainy weather had a great time cooking over an open fire and playing various games including Ting Tang Tommy.

The tournament as ever was full of tennis with all the players having plenty of opportunity to take to the courts in singles and doubles. The matches were played at three local venues with the majority taking place at Gerrards Cross LTC.

James Davis had another great week winning the final of the 12U boys, his second grade 3 title this summer. James’ win was particularly impressive as he played his semi final on the Saturday morning and due to rain delay didn’t play the final till early evening where he saw off ten set points against Taylan Ozdemir in the first set and then went on to take the second set 6-0.

Also well done to Tim Bean who won the Mens consolation draw and Tim and Spencer Pells who reached the semi’s in the Mens doubles

Special mention must also go to Rebecca Riezebos (9.1) who played some fantastic tennis throughout the week which culminated in her going three sets with Michela Marini (7.2).

Many thanks to Andy Scholfield and his team at Gerrards Cross LTC for their welcome and a great tournament. We look forward to seeing them all next year!

The Canterbury Open 2010

The second week of our summer tour saw sixteen of our youngsters competing in The Canterbury Open. Being so close to home meant that tents could be swopped for home comforts!!! The tournament was well attended by the families of players and coaches, Eb Appeti, Richard Myall, Helen Shattower and Faye Robertson.

During the week all our players put in some fantastic performances. In the Under 8 draw three Appeti Academy players Ciaran Brewer, JoJo Thomas, Oliver Richards and one of our foundation players, Peter Jones battled through a field of 16 youngsters. Ciaran, JoJo and Oliver all won their boxes to go through to the next round. Once again all of them played some great tennis with JoJo and Oliver winning through to meet in an all Appeti final. This saw both boys matching each other but after some exciting points JoJo battled through to take the crown!

Congratulations also go to Saffron Taylor who competed in the Mini Green event where she won 2 out of 3 matches in her box and after a hard fought third/fourth play off walked away in fourth place.

Our older players equally did us proud.

Well done to Graham Hunt, a pupil at The Canterbury High School, as this was his first external tournament and he put in a solid performance any player would have been proud of.

On Finals Day each of the six matches being played had an Appeti Academy player in them as well as three juniors coached by Appeti Tennis as part of The Canterbury High School's Gifted and Talented programme.

In the Boys 12 and Under final Alex Mount showed his fighting spirit against Thomas Pullen, where after losing the first set 2-6, he rallied in an exciting and close second set, only losing by one break, 4-6. Well done to Alex, who as well as being part of the Appeti Academy, is also coached by us as part of The Canterbury High School's Gifted and Talented programme. Alex is a great sportsman and is sure to achieve more in the future.

Nancy Gullet was runner up in the Girls 14 and Under draw, after a slow start Nancy began to find her range and started to make a come back but unfortunately ran out of time. Her final score against Lucy Roper was 1-6, 2-6, with the second set score not reflecting how close the match actually was.

The Boy's 16's and 18's draw both featured the Number 1 and 2 seeds. Appeti Academy player Spencer Pells faced Thomas Hubble, also coached by Appeti Tennis as part of The Canterbury High School's Gifted and Talented programme. Both matches proved to be very tense and exciting with the boys displaying some great tennis. In the first match Thomas won a long first set in the tie break, 8-6 and went on to win the second set 6-4. The second match followed a similar pattern with Thomas winning a close first set with many breaks of serve 6-4 and then going on to win the second set 6-2. Congratulations to Thomas on winning both matches and well done to Spencer who played some great tennis during the week and who is looking forward to the rest of the Summer.

Evie Robertson played a solid match in the Girl's 12 and Under Final to become the 12 and under Girls Canterbury Open Champion 2010. Her opponent Hannah Watton played well, particularly in the first set where Evie having fallen behind 3-4 had to raise her game to win the set. After taking this first set Evie's determination to take the title spurred her on to take the second set, 6-1 and her first main draw singles title. Well done to Evie, who is now looking to add more trophies to her collection this Summer.

The match of the day was the Boy's 14 and under Final, contested by favourite Nicholas Hubble, coached by Appeti Tennis as part of The Canterbury High School's Gifted and Talented programme and Jamie Wallace, part of the Appeti Academy. Nicholas, motivated by his brother, Thomas' win earlier in the day, had been playing well all week. However, Jamie had been feeling confident and approached the final with a positive frame of mind.

With a crowd supporting him, Jamie got off to a great start taking the first set. Nicholas fought back in the second taking it to 5-5 but Jamie had the title in his sight and refused to let Nicholas back in, taking the second set and the title 7-5. Congratulations to Jamie, we are sure this won' t be his last win of the summer. Also, well done to Nicholas, who put up a great fight.

Well done to all our players who competed in The Canterbury Open and thanks to everyone who supported us during the week.

JoJo wins his first Trophy!

Two of our Academy players had successful tournaments at The Hythe Open and The Sunridge Park Junior Open this month.

JoJo Thomas played brilliantly to take the U8 title at The Hythe Open without dropping a game and Jamie Wallace was runner up in the 16U consolation draw at Sunridge Park. Jamie was really pleased with his performance especially as he beat three higher rated players over the week.

Well done lads and keep up the good work!!!

The Essex Open 2010

The first week of the Appeti Summer Tour saw 12 of our players heading to the courts at Billericay for The Essex Open 2010. Some solid performances were put in by a number of our players and their hard work over the year showed by the improvement in their game.

Coaches Eb, Richard and Faye camped at the tournament with seven players. Mornings and evenings were spent chopping wood, building fires and cooking. All the players worked as hard at the camp site as they did on court!

Well done to all of you who competed but particularly to James Davis who won his first Grade 3 main draw event. James was seeded fourth and played some great tennis over the week to take the 12 and Under Boys title after beating Finn Bass from Hertfordshire in the final, 6-2, 6-4.

Kate Robertson also had a good week reaching both the 18 and under Girls consolation final and along with team mate Hannah Tonry the Ladies Doubles final.

We’d like to thank David Fuchs and his team from Tennis Services Uk for such a well managed tournament and everyone at Billericay Tennis Club for making us all so welcome.

Appeti Players at Wimbledon!!!

It was a bumper Wimbledon for The Appeti Tennis Centre this year, with twenty-six juniors visiting The Championships during the two weeks. As well as the thirteen pairs of tickets the centre received for it's players, three trips organised by coaches meant that more kids than ever got to experience the special atmosphere of Wimbledon.

Eb Appeti took a group of six junior players to queue overnight for the first Monday The day proved very exciting, as within 10 minutes of getting into the grounds Rafa walked past the Appeti group on his way to the practice courts. Rafa practised for two hours and rewarded Spencer, who sat and watched for the full 2 hours, with his towel. The group of kids also got photos with Rafa and Serena, obviously a good luck charm as both players went onto win the Championships. This was to be the start of the excitement with Federer's nail biting match proving very tense and Djokovic's match under the roof ending at 11pm, the latest match ever played at Wimbledon. After loads of cheering, mexican waves and slow hand clapping Evie was rewarded with Djokovic's towel and everyone went home tired but happy.

Richard Myall took five juniors with tickets provided by The Tennis Foundation, three of whom had never been to Wimbledon before. It was great for them to sit on Centre Court and they got to see both the Ladies and Men's Champions Serena and Rafa. All the youngsters came away really inspired. Thanks to The Tennis Foundation for a fantastic day.

The last trip was organised by Helen Shattower, who took three of the centre's youngest players aged between 7-8 years old for a day, none of the kids had been to Wimbledon before, although we are confident that they will be playing there in a decade. It was a great experience for them and after double checking there was no chance they could test out Centre Court, they went to the practice courts were they given practice balls from Djokovic. After watching Rafa practising the boys went onto to meet with "Uncle" Toni Nadal, who happily posed for a photo with the three boys, making everyone back at the centre very jealous!

Andrea in Winning Form at Tennis!

We’d like to say well done to Andrea Sreckovic on her recent success when she represented her school at The U13 Kent Tennis Championships at Bromley. As reported in the East Kent Mercury .......

‘Andrea Sreckovic and Lucy Roper, both 13, and pupils at Sir Roger Manwood’s School, progressed through singles matches in a pool of five teams at Bromley.

They then played four knockout doubles matches, beating Junior King’s, Canterbury, in the semi-final to go on to a convincing win against home team Bromley.

The school head of girls’ PE Lesley Urquhart said: “The girls’ experience and wide shot selection was key to winning such a prestigious competition.”

Wimbledon 2010

Wow, what an amazing two days players and coaches from the Appeti Tennis Centre had queuing for the first day of Wimbledon 2010.

Arriving in the queue at 12pm Sunday meant that they had plenty of time to go off looking for players at The All England Lawn Tennis Club and the dedication to the hunt proved fruitful with the Appeti team getting photos with Robin Soderling, Giles Simmon and Darren Cahill amongst others.

The first Monday of Wimbledon proved very exciting, as within 10 minutes of getting into the grounds Rafa walked pass the Appeti group on his way to the practice courts. Rafa practised for two hours and rewarded Spencer, who sat and watched for the full 2 hours, with his towel.

This proved to be the start of the excitement with Federer's nail biting match proving very tense and Djokovic's match under the roof, and ending at 11pm, very exciting. We’d like to congratulate Oliver Richards, one of our red ball academy members, on his recent victory in a Matchplay at Hayne Barn Tennis Club, Hythe. Oliver won all five of his matches and was delighted to collect his first ever medal to show his success. Well done Oliver, we are all very proud of you!

Eastbourne Trip

During June twenty of our players, coaches and parents enjoyed an inspirational day at the Aegon International Tennis Tournament in Devonshire Park, Eastbourne. The day started well with the youngsters meeting Svetlana Kuznetsova just outside the entrance where they seized the opportunity to have their photo taken with her.

Once inside our juniors had a great time watching and meeting a number of the world ranked players who were competing there. Some of the highlights included meeting Amelie Mauresmo, former Wimbledon Champion, watching Francesca Schiavone, this year’s French Open winner, on practice courts and the opportunity to see James Blake in a closely fought match on Centre Court.

An exciting mens doubles with Murray and Marray just losing out to Golubev and Seppi ended what had been a fantastic day of tennis, ice-cream and meeting some great players.

Beach Tennis arrives at The Canterbury Campus

Players from Appeti Tennis haven't had to travel far to get to the beach this summer as the beach court facilities on The Canterbury Campus now provide Beach Tennis.

Players have had great fun diving around for balls and even Mums and Dads have been joining in the fun. The sport is played as doubles on a court similar to beach volleyball, with players using paddle bats and a depressurised tennis ball. Beach Tennis is a unique and enjoyable alternative to tennis, and can be played by all ages and standards.

Beach Tennis is great fun, competitive and easy to learn - it even has a World Championships, so keep your eyes peeled....

We are now a Tennis Centre with a Van!

Thanks to the generosity of Robin Colenso of Copri Systems, the Appeti Tennis Centre now has a player support vehicle. Robin donated an unused works van to Appeti Tennis in April and after a couple of months renovation the support vehicle is now ready to do it's job supporting players during tournaments by transporting equipment, providing a place to eat, string rackets or simply rest after a hard match.

Thanks also to Trevor May Contractors who donated funds towards the renovation of the van.

Appeti Tennis Holds a Training Day for Local Schools

A recent training day held at The Appeti Tennis Centre, Canterbury for 25 local primary school’s PE co-ordinators proved a great success with lots of positive feedback from all involved.

We’d like to thank Mark Siddall from Surrey for tutoring the course and The Tennis Foundation for providing all the represented schools with a primary pack of equipment to allow them to improve tennis provision within their own curriculum. This pack included :-

30 Rackets
30 sponge balls
30 Red outdoor balls
1 6ft mini tennis net
A roll of barrier tape
and a DVD with resource material for helping teacher’s deliver a better tennis programme.

Appeti Tennis Offering More Tennis to the Community.

This year Appeti Tennis, in association with The Canterbury Campus, is offering more tennis than ever to the local community - free of charge - after receiving funding from The Tennis Foundation and The Kent Sport Leisure and Olympics Service.

The Tennis Foundation has provided funding for a number of initiatives to bring tennis to local schools and local children. This funding will allow us to bring tennis to more schools and children for longer periods of time. Receiving this funding has been really important as it means that we can give children their first experiences of the game and encourage to continue playing.

The funding from The Kent Sport Leisure and Olympics Service is through the Sport Unlimited scheme, an innovative new youth sports programme that targets young people who enjoy sport but are not involved or engaged regularly in the local sports community. This has meant that students from The Canterbury High School have received coaching during lunch times and after school and children from the local community can access a Saturday morning tennis club free of charge.

Players and pupils from Appeti Tennis went on a cycle trip to Reculver on Saturday 17 April. Despite the chilly weather everyone had a great time and the sausages and bread rolls on the beach were very welcome at the end of the ride!!

We would like to congratulate Tim Bean on his recent success at The Sutton Easter Tournament Week 1. He put some solid performances in throughout the week and deserved his success in the Men’s consolation event where he dominated his semi final against Max Jaconelli to beat him convincingly 6-0, 6-1. Tim continued to play some great tennis in the final beating Ashley Mount-Grubb, a higher rated player 6-0, 6-0 to take the title.

After his success in the Men’s consolation Tim quickly changed his focus for his second final of the day where he joined forces with team mate Spencer Pells in The Men’s Doubles Event. After a closely fought contest Christian Kerrigan and Sasha Philbert just edged ahead to take the match 7-6(5), 6-3.

Oliver qualifies for The Kent 8U Championships

Last Sunday saw Oliver Richards, JoJo Thomas, Dushan Sreckovic and Ciaran Brewer, four of our youngest Academy players, competing in a qualifying event for the Kent 8U Championships. All four boys were keen to play and quickly settled into their first matches. After a thrilling morning of tennis JoJo just missed out on qualifying whereas Oliver won his box and is delighted to be going forward to the finals at Bromley.

We were very proud of all four boys who worked hard and showed great enthusiasm throughout the morning.

An All Appeti Final at Wilton Junior Tournament.

This school holiday has been a busy one for many of an Academy players competing in tournaments ranging from Leicester to Bromley. Most of the activity centred around The Wilton Junior Tournament with 9 players and all the coaches attending throughout the week. Special mention should go to Jamie Wallace who had a great week beating several opponents including a higher rated player to reach the quarter finals in the 14U Consolation Draw.

The culmination of the week saw Rebecca Riezebos and Hannah Tonry, two Appeti teammates meeting each other in a closely fought final. After a great second set, played in very wet conditions, Rebecca won through to take the title.

At The Centre

Whilst our Academy players have been competing externally our foundation youngsters have had a busy week playing back at home. Six of our orange ball juniors had a great morning playing matches against each other. Jack Hills and Michael Bax did really well in their first ever matchplay but congratulations go to Ben Gullett, who successfully beat all his opponents.

After lunch the orange ballers gave way to eight of our red ball players. After some really exciting contests Dushan Sreckovic just edged out Jo Jo Thomas to win the medal.

Well done to all our youngsters who have competed both at home and away!!

Welcome to The Academy

Appeti Tennis would like to welcome Jo-Jo Thomas and Ollie Richards to our Academy. Both boys are red ball players who have a real enthusiasm for the game and are always keen to compete and develop their skills further. The lads will be joining other academy players in fitness, squad and regular practice sessions as well as enjoying their individual lessons.

We would also like to welcome Ciaran Brewer into our Pre-academy. Ciaran has been in our foundation stage for just over 6 months and has already made great progress.

Well done lads and we are all looking forward to working with you as part of the Academy.

Saffron Taylor named as Sports Person of the Year 2010

We would like to congratulate Saffron Taylor, one of our mini tennis Academy members, for her recent success at The Canterbury Campus Awards ceremony. Saffron attends The Canterbury Primary School and was named their Sports Person of the Year for Key Stage 2 and presented with a medal for her efforts. Her name will also be added to a plaque which will be hung at The Canterbury Primary School for everyone to see.

Appeti Tennis Goes Bowling!!

Our January social saw 28 players and their parents taking to the lanes at Bugsy Bowling in Canterbury. The group were split into teams with older and younger bowlers competing against each other. There was a range of interesting techniques throughout the evening as balls rolled and pins fell.
Some great scores were achieved but special mention should go to Graham Hunt for the highest junior score and to Ray Dovey for the best adult one.
The evening ended up with everyone enjoying some food while discussing the best shots of the night!

Roger Draper visits Appeti Tennis and The Canterbury High School

On Thursday 21st January Roger Draper (Lawn Tennis Association chief executive) visited Appeti Tennis and The Canterbury High School. Roger met with Eb, Faye, David Platts (Deputy Head) and Phil Karnavas (Head Teacher) to tour the centre, during which he took time to talk to Tim Bean, Rebecca Riezebos and Ffion Newberry, 3 of our academy players, who were on court training before discussing future developments of the site.

We would like to thank Roger for taking the time to come and see us - his feedback was very positive and his vision of British Tennis inspired us to work harder than ever to get more kids from the local community playing and enjoying tennis.

Appeti Tennis - Parents Too!

We appreciate the number of hours, as a parent, you spend watching your child on the tennis court and are aware that many of you are either keen players or would like to come along and have a go.

Therefore we are starting a parents play session on Sunday evenings from 8pm - 10pm. These two hours will be dedicated to parents and other adult family members. No racket, no problem you are welcome to borrow a racket any time you come to play.
There is no need to make a regular commitment as this is a drop in session so you can come along any week you are available but we hope you will enjoy it so much that you want to become a regular player.

The two hour session will normally cost £5 for parents and £8 for other adults but as a taster during January 2010 we are offering parents the opportunity to come along and play totally free of charge.

Remember there is no need to book but if you do want more information then please feel free to contact Helen at the Centre.

Appeti Tennis in The Snow

The recent snowy weather hasn’t put a stop to the activities at The Appeti Tennis Centre, Canterbury. Sessions has continued as normal and the snow has been put to good use in some unusual fitness sessions!!
Over the snowy period players have been involved in building an igloo as well as taking on their coaches in a full scale snowball fight! Great fun was had by all!

The last Sunday before Christmas saw seven of our red ball players keenly competing in their own mini tournament. The afternoon proved exciting with some great sportsmanlike conduct and some closely fought matches. Well done to all our players but particularly to Matthew Spurling who was competing in his first tournament and to Jo Jo Thomas who won all of his matches.

Academy Christmas Party 2009

A great evening was had by all at this year’s Appeti Academy Christmas Party on Saturday. There was plenty of fun, food, games and music. Tables were turned as the parents took to the courts whilst the youngsters challenged each other on the wii, tabletennis and various other games including Pit and Twister. The evening finished with everyone out on court, in the dark, playing light frizbee and pass the ball.

The evening proved a great culmination to a successful year of social events for all our players and their families and we are already busy planning our activities for 2010.

Snow at Appeti

The recent snow may have brought areas of the country to a stop but not so at The Appeti Tennis Centre, Canterbury. The youngsters had great fun working well as a team perfecting their snow building skills. The group warmed up with the traditional snowman but soon decided to move on to a more useful sculpture, a snowfa for Court 1. The team beavered away collecting snow and after a lot of hard work were able to enjoy relaxing on their finished piece!

Ric wins through to become The Appeti Sponge Ball Champion.

Our October Social saw Academy members, coaches and parents taking to the courts for an exciting evening of tennis with a difference. All matches were played on mini courts using sponge balls and 23” rackets. The players were sorted into boxes and the competition began!

After a number of closely fought matches Scott and Ric came head to head in the final with Ric winning through to take the match 10-7. The evening concluded with everyone tucking into a fish and chip supper.

The Appeti Tennis Centre, Canterbury achieves Clubmark and Beacon Status.

The Appeti Tennis Centre, Canterbury are very pleased to have their hard work within the community recognised in two ways.

Firstly over the summer the Centre achieved their Tennis Club Mark. An award that recognises the contribution we make to sport across the county and in particular to developing younger players and British Tennis in general. All areas of our programme were considered and we are proud that we met the national standard for the service that we offer customers.

Secondly, as a site we have just been upgraded to full Beacon status by The Tennis Foundation. This organisation aims to get more people playing tennis across the country both recreationally and competitively. Therefore Beacon sites have to be open for general public use and offer quality coaching with competitive opportunities. As a centre these values are also important to us and therefore are very pleased to be selected as a Beacon facility.

We are very proud to have achieved both of these within the same year.

James Davis wins 12U Winter County Tournament

We’d like to congratulate James Davis on winning the 12 and under Winter County tournament held at Bromley earlier this month.

James played well battling through a tough first set in his semi final against Cameron Shah to win through 5-4(6) 4-0. He continued his form in the final against Matthew Summers taking the match 4-2 4-2.

His success means he has now qualified to progress to the next stage which takes place in November.

Appeti Academy at Chessington World Adventure

September's Academy Social Event saw a number of our players heading off for a fun packed day at Chessington World of Adventures, Surrey.

The day proved to be a great success with fantastic weather and relatively short queues. Everyone was able to go on the rides of their choice several times and a great day was had by all

Water and Wii’s not two combinations that you would normally mix but both played an important role in August’s Academy Social event. The event held at the centre saw 15 of our players involved in games ranging from water balloon volley ball to Guitar hero.

Appeti Summer Tournament Tour 2009 - Kent Closed

The final week gave our youngsters chance to compete against other Kent competitors in The County Closed Tournament at Bromley.

Over the week twenty of our players competed in draws ranging from Mini Red to the Under 21’s. Well done to all our players but particular congratulations to Evie and Katherine who met in the U12 consolation final and Leigh who won the Under 21 consolation and Kate who was runner up in the U18’s.

Everyone on the Appeti Team would like to say how proud we are of all our players who have shown great attitude throughout the summer and are looking forward to seeing them use their experience to develop their game further.

Appeti Summer Tournament Tour 2009 - Tunbridge Wells

The fifth week of the Appeti Summer Tour saw our players competing at Heartwood Tunbridge Wells Junior Open.

Throughout the week our players had plenty of opportunity to develop their grass court game as many of their matches took place on this surface. Once again a number of our players put in some good performances but special mention should go to Spencer Pells and Evie Robertson who joined forces in the U18 mixed doubles and put up a great fight against two older and higher rated players.

The Gerrards Cross LTC Junior and Senior Open Tournament.

And so the tour moved on to The Gerrards Cross LTC Junior and Senior Open Tournament. As in previous years this is split into two shorter tournaments allowing the players chance to focus on one age group at a time. Leigh Sargeant has a fantastic start to the week playing his best tennis so far of the summer to reach the U18 consolation final. To do this he had to beat a number of higher rated players so well done Leigh.

The second half of the week saw Leigh join forces with Tim Bean in the Mens doubles event. Both played well in an exciting match to knock out the number one seeds after a great come back from losing the first set 0-6. Meanwhile some of their younger team mates, Evie Robertson and Katherine Davis also played some great tennis to secure the U12 Girls doubles title.
Well done to all our Academy players who have competed so far and good luck to all of you who are preparing for the next two weeks at Tunbridge Wells and The Kent Open.

Back at Home!

This summer has seen The Appeti Tennis Centre - Canterbury hosting it’s first mini tennis competitions. During the summer break there has been regular opportunity for our younger members to join in fun tournaments at the centre.

Eight of our red ball players had a great morning playing lots of mini competitions against each other. They were supported throughout by a team of our Academy Juniors who did a great job in assisted them with scoring and line calls. Well done to Oliver Richards, Seb Sinclair, JoJo Thomas, Roan Richards, Sophie Hobbs, Peter Jones, Ciaran Brewer but especially to Ben Gullett who successfully won all his matches to be our overall winner.

The following week saw six of our orange ball juniors take to the courts for their first tournament experience. Saffron Taylor, Kaleem Bashir, Owen Alp, Oliver King, Harry Pryor and Elliot Wraight all played well throughout the morning and enjoyed the opportunity to improve their tennis through competitive play.

The Canterbury Junior Open 2009

Our next stop was the The Canterbury Junior Open. Once again we were well represented with some of our younger Academy members getting their first taste of external competition. Over the week there were a number of success stories including team mates Luis Sibson and Jamie Wallace meeting each other in the U12 consolation final. A great achievement for both boys as this is their first year of competing. Jamie fought through to take the title and went on to a double victory securing the U14’s as well.

Finals Day saw three of our Academy members playing side by side in their respective main draw finals. Spencer Pells, Hannah Tonry and James Davis all did us proud with their tennis, attitude and perseverance throughout their matches.

This week also saw Charlotte Hobbs competing at Reigate where she played with Lauren Benson to take the U18 Girls doubles title.

Summer Tournaments 2009

The first fortnight of the Appeti Summer Tour saw 19 of our players heading to the courts at Beckenham and Billericay. Some great performances were put in over the two weeks by a number of our youngsters, often just losing out to higher rated opponents.
Although few trophies were won everyone recognised how much their tennis had improved since last year and were looking forward to the rest of the summer.

Wimbledon Final’s Day

July's Academy Social Event centred around Wimbledon Final's Day. A large group of players, parents and grandparents gathered in the Sports Cafe on The Canterbury Campus to watch, what proved to be, another great final.

The group quickly split into two camps with half supporting Roddick, hoping to see him secure his first Wimbledon title whilst the others were firmly behind Federer. As the afternoon progressed the atmosphere became tense as neither side wanted their favourite to lose.

After a closely fought nail-biting battle Federer pulled through to gain his fifteenth Grand Slam title. A result that even Roddick fans agreed was a fantastic achievement.

Wimbledon 2009

This year twenty four members from the Appeti Academy were able to attend the Wimbledon Championships with tickets coming from various sources.

Over the fortnight a number of our younger players gained their first experience of the championships through tickets won in the LTA and centre's ballot

The first Monday saw a group of our older players and their coaches successfully getting Centre Court tickets after camping out over night in the famous 'queue'Apart from watching the opening day's play the day was spent autograph hunting and having photos taken with various players and other famous people. Tim finally managed to meet his idol, Andy Roddick whilst Spencer bumped into John McEnroe.

The second week saw three of our girls meeting the former champion Jana Novotna as well as Tim Henman and Mr Richard Williams through tickets gained in the LTA coaches ballot.

Everyone who attended this year throughly enjoyed their experience and were inspired to work hard so they could be on the courts rather than watching them in the future!

Academy Trip to Eastbourne International Tennis

On Monday 15 June players, coaches and parents from the Appeti Tennis Academy took a trip to the Eastbourne Tennis Championships.

With the sun blazing in the sky, the day got off to a great start when we bumped into French Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova on her way to the practice courts.

In between watching some great matches, most of the time was spent chasing players for photos and autographs, with players such as Caroline Wozniacki, Amélie Mauresmo, Samantha Stosur and Ivan Ljubicic happy to sign and pose for photos.

However, plenty of time was also spent in the Playzone area, where everyone took turns trying to knock Richard off the mini tennis court. And let's not forget the annual visit to the Ice Cream Parlour, now frequented by Caroline Wozniacki, where everyone over indulged in sundae's.

It really was a fantastic day of tennis and finished by sharing a step with Jamie Murray as we all peered over into Court 2 to watch the end of an exciting Men's Doubles match.

The Road to Wimbledon

We'd like to congratulate all our players who have participated in The Road to Wimbledon draw this year. The Girl’s final saw Andrea Sreckovic and Nancy Gullett come head to head. These two girls are renowned for their long battles and this match proved to be no different with Andrea winning through 6-4 7-6(5).

The boys final was a replay of last year with Fenner Robertson meeting Spencer Pells however the standard was much higher and both boys played some good quality tennis throughout. Spencer proved to be stronger so will be joining Andrea at the County playoffs later in the month.

Well done to all our players but particularly those newer to competition and to Spencer who over his four matches only lost eight games.

May Competition

May has been a busy month for our academy players with a number competing in various tournaments and matchplays around the South East region.

Spencer Pells, Leigh Sargeant and Tim Bean all participated in The Clay Millennium Challenge at Sutton Tennis Centre. All three played some great matches over the three weekends but particular mention should go to Tim who beat a player four ratings above him to reach the men’s consolation final.

The end of the month saw our players represented at two Kent tournaments. Fourteen youngsters headed for the courts at Parklangley while six stayed nearer home at The East Kent Championships. The week saw some solid performances with Charlotte Hobbs, Rachel Davis and Rebecca Riezebos reaching the finals for their respective age groups. Our younger players also had a successful week winning over half of their matches so well done to Dushan Sreckovic and Oliver Sigurdsson. However the match of the week was played by Evie Robertson who fought back from being one set down to beating her higher rated opponent 1-6, 7-5, 10-5.

May's Academy social event saw a group of our players spending an inspirational day at Wimbledon. The day started with a ‘behind the scenes’ tour which gave the youngsters the opportunity to see places not normally available to spectators and culminated with seeing the coveted Wimbledon trophies.

A great day was had by all and hopefully gave a future champion their first experience of Wimbledon!!

Planet Lazer

March’s Academy social event saw twenty eight of our juniors and their family members take over the arena at Planet Lazer, Canterbury. For the first contest the group was divided into two equal teams which saw the reds take on the blues in what proved to be a fierce competition! The groups then changed so the younger guys took on their parents who joined forces with the older academy members. Finally the boys took on the girls with Ric, Tim and Nat becoming honorary ladies to balance the teams. The girls proved triumphant although Richard is convinced his ‘Jack Bauer’ moves sealed the victory!!!.

A great evening was had by all and congratulations to Mrs Wallace, Rebecca and Ed who all had winning scores.

Leigh Sargeant wins Winter County Tournament at Polo Farm.

Congratulations to Leigh Sargeant who won the Winter County Tournament at the Canterbury Indoor Tennis Centre on Sunday 8 March 2009. Leigh started really well dominating his first opponent from the start to win 4-0, 4-2.

In the second match Leigh came up against Number 2 seed and higher rated local player, Toby Churchill. From Toby’s reputation Leigh knew that this would be a tough match. A cautious start from both players, saw Leigh successfully put the nerves behind him, pull ahead and take the first set 4-0. The second set was more challenging for Leigh but he focused on his own game and didn’t allow Toby the chance to comeback and took the second set 4-2, securing a place in the final against fellow Kent player, Alex Batchelor.

In the final both boys showed a strong will to win. However, Leigh was confident from his previous wins and stamped his authority on the match, winning in straight sets, 4-2, 4-2.

Leigh was really pleased with this result and is looking forward to the rest of the year.

Nintendo Night at Appeti Tennis

February’s Appeti Academy Social activity saw 25 players and coaches engage in a night of gaming at the centre, with both Nintendo Wii and Game Cube.

Games included Topspin Tennis 3, Mario Kart, Links Crossbow Training and, of course, the immensely popular Guitar Hero. The night also included an incredible 12 Pizzas from Dominoes and the usual array of munchies.

The Guitar Hero World Tour pack was provided by Helen and proved to be the most popular game during the evening and included 2 guitars, microphone and drum kit. Check out the photos and video links including a special video of Livin' on a Prayer, performed by the entire group.

Appeti Tennis goes Bowling

January’s Appeti Academy Social activity saw eighteen players, three parents and all five coaches take to the ten pin bowling lanes at AMF Ashford.

The group had four adjacent lanes and it wasn’t long before the balls started to roll and the pins to fall! Luis led the way with an early strike but was soon followed by a number of others as the competition hotted up.

As the evening progressed scores and techniques improved with most players scoring higher in their second game. As expected, rivalry on the coaches team was fierce and the games ended one a piece to Eb and Richard. A decider took place through Mario Karts with Eb speeding through the finish line as the eventually winner! The night was rounded off with food, friendly banter and a few moves on the dance mat!

A great time was had by all and everyone is looking to next months social event.

Christmas Party 2008

The pupils from the Appeti Tennis Academy had their Christmas party on Saturday - it was a great evening with plenty of food, fun, music and dancing!!!!! The Centre became one big games room with reception converted into a computer games station, the lounge area turned into a table tennis arena and the office hosting board games. There was also some role reversal, as parents took to the courts and kids became the spectators!!
